National Broadcasting Corporation talk about its roles in Elections
The Papua New Guinea National Research Institute (PNG NRI) is aware of the importance of the 2022 National General Election and has been facilitating seminars to allow key stakeholders to talk about their roles in elections and how they are preparing for the 2022 National General Election.
PNG NRI Acting Director, Dr Osborne Sanida said the PNG NRI Council had approved a program focusing on issues relating to the election preparation, election observation, and post-election governance matters. He said this will provide information for the public in the interest of advocating for a free, fair and transparent 2022 Elections.
The third seminar presentation was done by the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) Managing Director, Mr. Kora Nou on NBC’s preparedness for the elections. This followed from the first two presentations in the past two weeks by the Department of Provincial and Local-level Government Affairs (DPLGA) and the Royal PNG Constabulary (RPNGC).
Speaking at the seminar presentation yesterday, Mr Nou said NBC has always been supporting the work of the PNG Electoral Commission (PNGEC) in terms of NBC’s role in providing consistent and comprehensive coverage of Elections since 1975, and the 2022 National Election won’t be any different.
“We stand ready to assist the PNGEC and our stakeholders in making 2022 National General Election a successful one.” He said the elections have three major stages: pre-elections, during elections and post-elections.
“NBC now stands to appeal to the PNG Electoral Commission, Office of the Registrar of Political Parties and key stakeholders that now is the time to start conducting awareness and inform our people. Pre-election, which include updating of common roll is as important as the other two stages of the election.”
Mr Nou said NBC has 472 staff across the country and has presence in all provinces, except Jiwaka and Hela provinces.
He said although the NBC has played the official broadcaster role in past elections, often the official advice to take on that role is given late. Ideally, NBC is advised earlier to assist in timely preparations and also being to assist other media to work together in the delivery of the Elections, including the National General Election in 2022.
NBC has submitted a budget of K20 million which will cater for restoration and upgrade of transmission and studio equipment, vehicle hire, duty travel for content gatherers, and outside broadcasts.
Mr Nou thanked the PNG NRI for facilitating the series of seminars to highlight the importance of the election process and preparation for the elections.
