Seminar on Population Data Collection, Storage, Management, and Other Purposes
The Papua New Guinea National Research Institute (PNGNRI) will host a seminar from 15 to 16 July 2026 at the PNG Forest Research Institute, Lae, Morobe Province to address critical challenges in population data management and its vital role in planning, governance, and elections.
The Minister for Administrative Services, Hon. Richard Masere, will present an overview of the challenges faced in the digital age. Another key speaker, Professor Nicole Hailey, the new Electoral Commissioner, will present on the Common Roll, including its basis and associated costs. Other notable presentations will be made by the Department of Prime Minister and NEC, National Statistical Office, PNG Civil and Identity Registry, Department of Information Communication Technology, Department of Provincial and Local Government Affairs and Department of National Planning and Monitoring.
The seminar aims to bring together key stakeholders to explore strategies for improving the collection, storage, and management of population data, including Village Records, Civil Registration, Electoral Rolls, and Biometric Voting systems. Strengthening these foundational data systems is essential for ensuring accurate electoral processes, enhancing public service delivery, and supporting evidence-based national development planning.
In light of recent electoral challenges and the upcoming introduction of biometric voter registration for the 2027 National General Elections, the seminar seeks to promote a coordinated, whole-of-government approach to data administration. It aims to enhance the integrity, reliability, and accessibility of population data, thereby restoring public confidence in democratic institutions and strengthening governance.
This event provides a platform for stakeholders across government, civil society, and development sectors to collaborate on reform strategies that will underpin sustainable growth and national stability.
